Content covered:

The activity explores the main characteristics of fish as vertebrate animals, highlighting the presence of a backbone, scales, fins, and gills. It also introduces the role of fins in movement, changing direction, and maintaining balance, as well as the function of gills in obtaining oxygen from water.

Students also learn that fish come in different sizes, shapes, and colors and that some species live in freshwater, such as rivers and lakes, while others live in saltwater, such as seas and oceans.

Important information for teachers:

The activity was designed to give students access to the content before answering the questions. In the visual summary, information is accompanied by illustrations highlighting the backbone, scales, fins, and gills. The material itself encourages students to observe the images and ask for help with reading when necessary.

In the first question, students observe a fish and visually identify the environment where it can live, choosing among water, a tree, and a desert. Next, they observe different animals and circle only those that belong to the fish group, developing classification and visual discrimination skills.

The third question focuses on classifying fish as vertebrates. To reduce the need for independent writing, students are given a word bank containing INVERTEBRATE – VERTEBRATE and select the word that correctly completes the sentence.

Next, Science content is integrated with fine motor skills. Students receive an illustration of a fish and color its fins blue. In the following question, they observe the fins indicated by arrows, count them, and color the corresponding number.

Finally, the activity explores how fish breathe. Students visually compare gills, a beak, and a trunk and trace the name of the structure fish use for breathing. In this way, learning Science content also contributes to word recognition and tracing practice.
