WATCH THE VIDEO OF THE COMPLETE ACTIVITY

⚠️ This material is an adapted Mathematics activity designed to teach Matrices and the Perimeter of Plane Figures in a visual, progressive, and accessible way.

Number of questions in the activity:

5 adapted questions + complete answer key, distributed across 2 activity pages.

The activity follows a progression that begins with identifying rows and columns in a matrix, moves on to determining its order, adding the elements of a row, and subtracting matrices. Students then connect perimeter to the idea of fencing the boundary of a space and finish by calculating the perimeter of a rectangular plot using measurements provided directly in the image.

Target audience:

The material is especially suitable for middle school and, depending on curriculum adaptation needs, may also be used in high school. The material presents Matrices and Perimeter of Plane Figures as learning objectives.

It may especially support students with mild Intellectual Disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), difficulties in Mathematics, difficulties with abstraction, and students who need to develop spatial organization skills.

It is particularly suitable for students who can already perform basic mathematical operations but need greater visual organization, concrete examples, and more structured procedures to progress toward more abstract mathematical concepts.

Content covered:

The first part of the activity focuses on matrices, covering the concepts of row, column, and order, as well as adding the elements of a row and subtracting matrices. The spatial organization of the numbers and visual highlights help students understand the position occupied by each element.

The second part introduces the perimeter of plane figures through the idea of measuring the entire boundary of a space. Instead of beginning only with a definition or formula, students observe a garden that needs to be fenced and connect the amount of fencing required to the concept of perimeter.

Important information for teachers:

In the first question, students observe a matrix with 2 rows and 3 columns. Arrows and visual highlights indicate what a COLUMN is and what a ROW is. Students then complete the number of rows and columns and identify the order as 2 × 3.

In the second question, using the same matrix, students add the elements of the first row: 3 + 6 + 2. Instead of having to independently record the entire calculation, they select the result from four answer choices, arriving at 11.

The third question progresses to matrix subtraction. The instruction itself guides students: “Subtract the elements that are in the same position.” Students observe two 2 × 2 matrices and complete the corresponding results, reinforcing the importance of the position of each element in matrix operations.

In the fourth question, the focus shifts to Plane Geometry through a concrete situation: a person is renovating a small rectangular garden and needs to determine how many meters of fencing will be required. Among area, perimeter, height, and volume, students identify perimeter as the measurement they need.

Finally, the fifth question visually presents a rectangular plot with sides measuring 6 m, 4 m, 6 m, and 4 m. The calculation is already organized as 6 + 4 + 6 + 4, and students complete the calculation and select 20 m as the correct perimeter.

Key features:

✅ Combines Matrices and Perimeter in a single adapted activity.

✅ Uses colors, arrows, and spatial organization to distinguish rows from columns.

✅ Breaks mathematical operations into small, structured steps, reducing the level of abstraction required.

✅ Introduces perimeter through a concrete situation: fencing a garden.

✅ Combines different response formats: completing, selecting, adding, subtracting, interpreting, and calculating.

✅ The entire material is available in UPPERCASE TEXT, with visual support, BNCC-related skills, and a complete answer key.
