The introductory summary presents essential information needed to complete the activity: the Renaissance was a cultural movement, it began primarily in Italy and spread throughout Europe. It also explains that trade and cities grew, patrons provided financial support to artists and scholars, artists produced paintings and sculptures, and printing made it easier to produce books.
In addition to historical content, the activity integrates skills related to the process of learning to read and write. Words such as ITALY, TRADE, PATRONS, SCULPTURE, BOOKS, LEONARDO, and MICHELANGELO appear throughout the activities, connecting reading and word recognition directly to the historical topic being studied.
In the first question, students are provided with a visual model of Italy, accompanied by the country’s flag, and observe a map of Europe. Their task is to find Italy and mark its location with an X. In this way, the historical content is also connected to spatial awareness and map-reading skills.
In the second question, four scenes are presented, and students must select the one that represents trade. The images include two people conducting a transaction, someone sleeping, a person playing a musical instrument, and an artist painting. The activity develops visual recognition and makes the information from the summary about the growth of trade in cities more concrete.
In the third question, students learn that a patron provided resources that allowed an artist to work. Instead of answering in writing who the patron was, students complete a maze, guiding the character who provides resources to the artist. This transforms a historical concept into a visual and motor-based activity.
In the fourth question, students revisit the information that Renaissance artists produced paintings and sculptures. They observe a paintbrush, sculpting tools, a statue, and a painting and must match each material to the corresponding artwork.
In the fifth question, the activity introduces Leonardo da Vinci and the Mona Lisa. Using a word bank containing only MONA – LEONARDO, students complete the sentence “_____ da Vinci painted the _____ Lisa.” This structure reduces the amount of independent writing required while developing reading, recognition, and use of vocabulary related to the content.
Finally, in the sixth question, students find six Renaissance-related terms in a word search: TRADE, SCULPTURE, DAVID, MICHELANGELO, BOOKS, and PATRONS. The activity reviews previously studied vocabulary while developing attention, visual scanning, and word recognition.
