The activity was designed so that students understand electrostatic phenomena before relying on mathematical calculations.
In the first question, an everyday situation shows a person combing their hair and presents the example of an electrified comb capable of attracting small pieces of paper. Based on this scene, students identify the phenomenon as Static Electricity, beginning with something observable before moving on to more abstract concepts.
In the second question, two positive charges are shown side by side. Students recognize that charges with the same sign repel each other, visually establishing the relationship between the signs of the charges and the type of interaction.
Next, Coulomb’s Law is introduced conceptually. Instead of requiring students to immediately apply the formula, the activity asks them to identify that the law is used to determine the electric force between charges. In this way, students first understand the purpose of the law before progressing to its mathematical representation.
On the second page, two situations show the same charges at different distances. Students compare the “before” and “after” situations and conclude that when the distance increases, the electric force decreases. This visual representation allows students to qualitatively explore one of the fundamental relationships described by Coulomb’s Law.
