The activity covers Least Common Multiple (LCM); equivalent fractions; addition of fractions with different denominators; decimal place alignment; addition of decimal numbers; subtraction of decimal numbers in a word problem; division of fractions; converting division into multiplication by the reciprocal; and division involving a decimal number.
One of the main features of this activity is that the adaptation does not eliminate the mathematical challenge. Instead, it changes the way certain procedures are presented.
In question 2, for example, the student must calculate 1/4 + 1/6, but the procedure is divided into steps: first, the student finds the LCM of 4 and 6 and then converts the fractions so that they have the same denominator. Boxes placed in the numerators and denominators also visually indicate where each value should be written.
In question 3, there is a structured space to vertically organize 12.5 + 3.25, helping the student align the decimal places and decimal point correctly. Question 6 provides a similar space for the student to work through the division 24.8 ÷ 4.
