⚠️ This is an adapted Science and Geography activity designed especially for students who are developing literacy skills. The material explores the Earth’s Interior and the Layers of the Atmosphere while also developing reading and writing skills through images, UPPERCASE TEXT, word banks, vowels, word searches, dotted words for tracing, and matching activities. This allows students to continue developing literacy skills while participating in the same scientific content being studied by the class.

The sequence begins with recognizing planet Earth and its three main layers. Students then work with quantity, location, and the sequence of the crust, mantle, and core. In the second part, the focus shifts to the atmosphere and its five layers, integrating scientific content with specific literacy activities.

Target audience:

The material was developed especially for students who are developing literacy skills, including those who still need reading support to understand instructions.

It may also support pre-literate students transitioning into literacy, students with mild to moderate Intellectual Disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, Down Syndrome, and learning difficulties in Science and Geography.

Although it develops literacy skills, the material maintains curricular content related to the structure of the Earth and the atmosphere. It can therefore be used with middle school students and, depending on individual curriculum adaptation needs, also with high school students.

Important information for teachers:

One of the main features of this activity is that literacy development is not separated from the curricular content. Scientific vocabulary itself becomes a resource for reading, recognition, and writing practice.

In the first question, for example, students observe an image of the planet and locate and circle the word EARTH among other words. Next, they use a word bank containing CRUST – MANTLE – CORE to label the three layers in a representation of the Earth’s interior.

The activity gradually progresses toward scientific concepts. Students count the Earth’s three main layers, identify the crust as the layer where we live, and organize CRUST → MANTLE → CORE from the outermost part toward the center of the planet.

In the second part, the same approach is applied to the atmosphere. An illustration of a spacecraft in motion introduces an activity in which students complete the word ATMOSPHERE by filling in the missing vowels.

Next, the word search simultaneously develops reading skills and scientific vocabulary using TROPOSPHERE, STRATOSPHERE, MESOSPHERE, THERMOSPHERE, and EXOSPHERE. Students then trace the name of the layer in which we live and finish by matching clouds and rain with the troposphere, meteors with the mesosphere, and satellites with the exosphere.
