WATCH THE FULL ACTIVITY VIDEO

⚠️ This material is an adapted History activity in Brazilian Sign Language (Libras), designed to expand Deaf students’ access to content about Early Civilizations, with a focus on Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia.

Number of activities included:

6 adapted activities in Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) and Portuguese + complete answer key, organized in a visual, objective, and progressive sequence.

The activity begins by helping students understand that many early civilizations developed near rivers and that these rivers played an important role in agriculture. Students then identify the Nile River, the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, the Sumerians as one of the peoples of Mesopotamia, and the pharaoh as the ruler of Ancient Egypt.

Target audience:

This material was developed primarily for Deaf students who use Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) and can be used by History teachers, bilingual educators, professionals working in Specialized Educational Support (AEE), and other educators involved in Deaf education.

It may also support students with Intellectual Disabilities associated with deafness, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) associated with deafness, and Deaf students who are learning written Portuguese as a second language.

Printable full-color PDF, including:

For Teachers:

The main feature of this activity is its focus on linguistic accessibility. Students do not have to rely exclusively on reading Portuguese to understand what they are being asked to do, as instructions and key information are also represented in Brazilian Sign Language (Libras).

The sequence is also structured to present one main historical concept at a time. Students first establish the relationship civilizations → rivers → agriculture and then move on to specific knowledge about Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia.

In the activity about Egypt, for example, students observe an agricultural landscape located near a river alongside the Libras sign for RIVER. In the activity about Mesopotamia, a map visually highlights the rivers that cross the region. In the final activity, the Libras sign for ANCIENT EGYPT appears alongside images of different types of rulers, allowing students to identify the pharaoh.

Key Features:

✅ Integrates Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) and written Portuguese, expanding Deaf students’ access to History content.

✅ Supports a bilingual educational approach, allowing students to connect signs in Libras with their corresponding words and expressions in written Portuguese.

✅ Provides strong visual support through landscapes, maps, historical figures, and representations directly related to the concepts being studied.

✅ Develops the content progressively through the sequence early civilizations → rivers → agriculture → Egypt/Nile → Mesopotamia/Tigris and Euphrates.

✅ Introduces important historical vocabulary in Libras and Portuguese, including RIVER, NILE, TIGRIS, EUPHRATES, SUMERIANS, PHARAOH, and ANCIENT EGYPT.

✅ Reduces dependence on long written texts by combining sign language, written language, and contextualized visual information.

✅ Uses a predictable observe → understand → select structure, reducing the need for extensive written responses.

✅ Supports the development of historical literacy and bilingual vocabulary, helping students connect people, places, rivers, and civilizations.

✅ Uses maps and visual representations to support the relationship between historical content and geographic location.

✅ Allows students to demonstrate understanding mainly through recognition, visual association, and multiple-choice responses, rather than lengthy written production.

✅ Provides both standard capitalization and UPPERCASE versions, expanding the possibilities for adapting the material to different reading profiles.

✅ Includes a complete visual answer key, making correction and classroom use easier for teachers.

✅ Can be used as an introduction, adapted classroom activity, practice, reinforcement, or review of Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia.
