The material is structured so that students first understand what happens to food at each stage of digestion and only then complete the activities.

In the illustrated summary, each part of the digestive system is presented separately. Students learn that digestion begins in the mouth, where the teeth cut and break down food and saliva helps begin the digestive process. Food then travels through the esophagus until it reaches the stomach, where digestion continues.

Next, the summary explains that food moves into the small intestine, where much of the nutrients are absorbed and pass into the bloodstream. What is not absorbed continues to the large intestine, where some water is absorbed and the remaining waste contributes to the formation of feces. The liver and pancreas are also presented as organs that produce substances that help with digestion.
