The sequence begins with simpler identification and recognition activities. Gradually, students explore the path traveled by food, organs and structures of the digestive system, substances involved in digestion, and the location of organs within the human body, concluding with the hands-on assembly of the system.

Target audience:

The material was developed primarily for deaf students who use Brazilian Sign Language (Libras), especially those who require greater linguistic accessibility to follow the Science/Biology content taught in class.

It may also benefit deaf students learning written Portuguese as a second language (L2), students with Intellectual Disabilities associated with deafness, and students with ASD associated with deafness, as well as students who benefit from visual, concrete, and hands-on learning activities.

Important for the teacher:

One of the main features of this adaptation is its focus on linguistic accessibility. The instructions and different words used throughout the activities are accompanied by representations in Libras while also maintaining written Portuguese. Even the numerical answer choices in the first question include visual representations in Libras.

This organization also supports connections between Libras sign → image → written Portuguese word → scientific concept. In the activity about substances involved in digestion, for example, students observe the mouth, liver, and stomach, identify the corresponding signs and written names, and match these structures with saliva, bile, and gastric juice.

In the following stages, students use a word bank to name individual structures and then identify those same organs within a complete representation of the human body.

Finally, question 6 transforms the content into a hands-on learning experience: students cut out the digestive system pieces and organize them within the human body shown on the following page, analyzing the position and spatial relationships between the different structures.
