The first question begins with a sequence containing 3, 6, and 9 elements. Instead of simply choosing an answer, students visually complete the final two boxes and then identify the rule used. The answer key shows the sequence 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15, following the rule add 3.
In the second question, a box represents an unknown number of toys, and four new objects are added. Students trace the dotted expression x + 4 and then identify that the letter x represents an unknown number. In this way, the variable is not initially introduced as an abstract symbol without meaning.
The third question develops both reading and mathematical language. Students match phrases such as “a number plus 5,” “twice a number,” and “half of a number” with the expressions x + 5, 2x, and x ÷ 2.
